CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Arlington Community Foundation Scholarships 2008 have been awarded. Recipients have been selected and notified.

Thank you to all that applied. We received an impressive pool of applicants this year.
It was a very tough decision to narrow down 60 scholarships from the 220 amazing applications that came in.

You should have received notification in the mail by now. All renewal applicants, please check your inbox for an e-mail confirmation from us.

We would like to wish all high school seniors a wonderful graduation and good luck in college to everyone!

Thank you for applying for an ACF Scholarship

The deadline to apply for an ACF Scholarship has passed. Thank you to the more than 200 students who took the time to apply. The Foundation is working to process all the submitted paperwork and will be sending out an email by March 15 to all students who applied with information about the status of their application.
Scholarship applications are reviewed by community members and matched to scholarships over the next several weeks. The Foundation hopes to make award announcements by April 25.

One Day Left

What are you waiting for? Start and finish your online scholarship application by Friday, March 7 at 5:00 pm. As of this moment there are many scholarships without eligible candidates. It can be worth your time to apply.

1. Apply online.
2. Submit 2 letters of recommendation.
3. Send a copy of SAT report, if you have one.
4. If not at APS high school, send a transcript.
5. Send a copy of your Student Aid Report, if interested in scholarships based on financial need.

How Do I Submit My SAT?

How to submit an SAT report is our MOST Frequently Asked Question. Here is the answer:
We do not have a College Board code for sending a report, so you can do any of these:

copy the report and mail it to us at 2525 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22201
view the report online, copy the text and paste into an email to us at scholarship@arlcf.org
if you are at an Arlington Public High School give a copy of the report to the scholarship coordinator (HB-Ms. Eisley; W-L-Mr. Hill; Wakefield-Mr. Clisham; Yorktown-Ms. German) and they will be sure we receive it by the deadline.

Just be sure to submit it by one of those methods by March 7!

We don't require the SAT so if you do not have a report, don't sweat it. If you have an ACT score, you can send a copy of that instead. If you have neither, its okay. For some of the most competitive scholarships that are high dollar or have many eligible applicants, the scores may make a difference.

Don't Forget, FREE FAFSA Workshop this Saturday Feb 16!!!

Attention: Arlington High School Seniors!

Are you and/or your parents confused with trying to fill out those FAFSA forms? Well help is here!

Join us at the FAFSA-Free Application for Federal Student Aid workshop this Saturday, February 16th.

We will answer any or all questions you may have pertaining to the FAFSA. There will be plenty volunteers to give one-on-one, hands on help for you and your folks. We will assist you in completing the ONLINE application right there and then.

Need help translating in Espanol? Don't worry, we even have Spanish translators standing by to help you and your parents further understand the process.

This FREE clinic will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. so be sure to mark your calendar. I advise you to show up early, grab a seat and get this squared away so you can enjoy the long weekend ahead! Please be sure that you or your parents bring along your most current tax returns, 2007 is best, but you can start with 2006 information.

No registration required, just swing on by! See you Saturday!

Most of the ACF scholarships require a completed FAFSA. So remember, even if you don't attend this Saturday, we must have a copy of your submitted FAFSA report along with your application by March 7.

Be Sure to Click Submit

I can see that many students have begun their online scholarship application. That's great. PLEASE remember to finish the application and click SUBMIT by March 7. Perhaps you need to finish your statement or update an activity. Whatever you need to finish, just do it - by Friday, March 7.

If you want to be considered for the scholarships based on financial need, the ACF needs a copy of your Student Aid Report that you receive after you complete the FAFSA. Don't worry about what you entered on the scholarship application, just be sure to submit the Student Aid Report!

Remember that on Saturday, February 16 from 10am to 3pm we will help you on the FAFSA at Arlington Central Library.

Great Presentation on the FAFSA

The Arlington Community Foundation hosted a great workshop on completing the FAFSA on January 24 at Central Library. The presenter, Dale Schmidt, did a fantastic job of explaining some complicated FAFSA questions. The workshop was videotaped by Arlington Education TV and we will update the blog with information about when the show will be aired on cable TV. The workshop was attended by more than 50 students and parents. Stella Martinez provided much appreciated Spanish translation.
If you would like more help on the FAFSA, attend the February 16 clinic at Arlington Central Library. Bring your tax information and be ready to take the steps to getting financial aid for college. Note that March 1 is priority deadline for submitting your Student Aid Report at many Virginia schools to obtain.

Get the FAFSA Done Early

Completing the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a necessary step to obtaining any federal, state, most college and most scholarship awards. After completing the FAFSA the student receives a Student Aid Report. The ACF Scholarship Application requires that the SAR be submitted by March 7, 2008. Many Virginia higher education institutions have a priority deadline for submitting the SAR to obtain state aid of March 1, 2008.

The ACF wants to help students and families complete the FAFSA. You can learn how and get help completing the FAFSA at:

FAFSA Hands-On Clinic - Complete the FAFSA with assistance from volunteers on Saturday, February 16 between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm at Arlington Central Library.

If you plan to apply for an ACF Scholarship and can't attend one of these events to get help on the FAFSA, feel free to call the ACF with your questions. We want to help you get all the money you deserve for college!

Scholarship Applicant Now Available Online

Do it today! Arlington High School Seniors planning to attend college and currently awarded College Students may now access the Arlington Community Foundation Scholarship Application for 2008-2009.

The online application and any required materials must be submitted by March 7, 2008.
High school seniors must send two letters of recommendation and SAT scores.
Applicants not enrolled at APS must submit their high school transcript.
Renewal applicants must submit their college transcript.

Completing this one application opens the doors to all the scholarships awarded by the Arlington Community Foundation.

2008 Scholarship Listings

Arlington Chamber of Commerce Scholarship (2 at $2,000) for high school seniors who are Arlington residents who have at least a 2.8 GPA, and who demonstrate student and community leadership, to attend an accredited post-secondary institution. FN

Arlington Community Foundation Scholarship (1 at $1,000; valued at $4,000) for an Arlington senior attending an Arlington high school, with at least a 2.5 GPA, to attend Northern Virginia Community College as a full-time student (12 or more semester credits). Renewable for up to 4 years to complete an associates or an undergraduate degree, with good academic standing. FN

Arlington Gay and Lesbian Alliance Scholarship (2 at $2,000) for APS high school seniors who are members of their school’s Gay Straight Alliance or whose accomplishments demonstrate significant support for the Arlington Public Schools’ policies of diversity, fairness and safety, as demonstrated in an essay.

Arlington School Library Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for an Arlington Public Schools high school senior whose goals have been impacted or affected by the student’s school library, as demonstrated in an essay. FN

Arlington Women’s Civic Alliance Scholarship (1 at $1,000; valued at $5,000) for a woman living in Arlington who earned a high school diploma at least five years ago, and is pursuing at least half-time an undergraduate degree from a 2 or 4-year college or university or a certificate from a vocational-technical school. May be renewed for up to 4 years if the student remains in good academic standing. FN

Arlington’s Future Scholarship (2 at $2,000; valued at $8,000) for APS high school seniors who currently reside in committed affordable housing, as defined by the Arlington County Housing Division, to attend an accredited post-secondary institution. Preference will be given to students with a 2.5 or higher GPA. Renewable for up to 3 years with good academic standing. FN R.

Scott Bates Memorial Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for a Yorktown senior to attend a Virginia college or university. FN Ben Burdetsky Youth-In-Action Scholarship (2 at $1,000; valued at $4,000) for APS high school seniors, 1 male and 1 female, to attend an accredited institution. Consideration will be given to the student’s participation in athletics, community service and leadership. Renewable for up to 3 years with good academic standing. FN

Edith C. Burroughs Scholarship (1 at $2,500; valued at $10,000) for an APS senior, with at least a 2.5 GPA, who has been a member of the women's crew team, to attend an accredited 4-year college or university. Renewable for up to 3 years with good academic standing. FN

Fredrick C. Burroughs Scholarship (1 at $1,000; valued at $4,000) for an APS senior, with at least a 3.0 GPA, to attend an accredited 4-year college or university. Renewable for up to 3 years with good academic standing. FN

Marjorie D. Buynak Scholarship (3 at up to $5,000; valued at $20,000) for an Arlington senior with at least a 3.0 GPA to attend a 4-year college or university. Renewable with good academic standing. FN

Elizabeth P. and Edmund D. Campbell/Verizon Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for a Washington-Lee senior to attend a 4-year college or university.

Paul Richard Cherney Memorial Scholarship (2 at $1,000) for one Yorktown senior girl and one Yorktown senior boy to attend an accredited college or university. FN

Civic Federation 911 Scholarship (5 at $1,000; valued at $4,000) for high school seniors or students who have deferred college enrollment for one year with a 2.5 high school GPA to attend an accredited post-secondary institution. Applicants must have a parent who has been an Arlington County uniformed public safety employee or dispatcher for no fewer than 10 years, retired from one of the respective departments, been permanently disabled on the job, or killed in the line of duty. Renewable for up to 3 years with good academic standing.

Community Scholarship ($1,000 each) for previous recipients of Arlington Community Foundation scholarships, who remain in good academic standing at their undergraduate learning institutions. FN

Lillian Day School Spirit Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for Yorktown senior with a GPA of 3.5 or higher, to attend a 4-year college or university, who has fostered school spirit through active participation in Yorktown activities for at least 3 years.

Dolan Family Nursing Scholarship (2 at up to $5,000; valued at $20,000) for Arlington residents, either graduating from an Arlington high school or currently in college, to study nursing at a college or university. Renewable with good academic standing. FN

Jerome Evenson Scholarship (1 at $3,000) for an APS high school senior planning to study science, with a preference for a student wishing to becoming a science teacher, to attend a 4-year college or university. FN

Glencarlyn/Carlin Springs Scholarship Fund (1 at $1,500; valued at $6,000) for an APS high school senior with at least a 2.5 GPA, who attended Glencarlyn or Carlin Springs Elementary School for at least 3 years, to attend a college or other higher education institution. Renewable for up to 3 years with good academic standing. FN

Guernsey Family Scholarship (1 at $500) for an Arlington resident to attend Northern Virginia Community College. FN

Kenneth M. Haggerty, D.D.S. Scholarship for the Study of Health Sciences (2 at $1,000) for students who reside in Arlington, Falls Church or McLean, who have completed 2 years of college, declared a major in the health sciences, and maintained at least a 3.0 GPA. FN

Ernest A. and Virginia C. Karl Scholarship (3 at $1,000; valued at $4,000) for Washington-Lee seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA. One scholarship for a student with a parent who is a refugee or immigrant to the U.S. Student must be a citizen or permanent resident. Renewable with good academic standing. FN

Rose Benté Lee Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for an Arlington resident to study nursing at a Virginia college or university. FN

Macy’s Scholarship (2 at $2,500; valued at $10,000) for Arlington high school seniors with at least a 2.5 GPA, to attend an accredited learning institution. Renewable for 3 years with good academic standing. FN for one award.

Donn and Michael Marston Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for a high school senior residing in Arlington who has made a significant contribution to the athletic program in his/her Arlington high school. The student cannot be a recipient of full college athletic scholarship.

Charles P. Monroe Memorial Scholarship (1 at $1,000) to attend a 4-year college or university for an African-American high school senior with at least a 2.0 GPA residing in Arlington County, who has or whose family has been affected by the Civil Rights movement, as expressed in an essay. FN

Charles M. and Elizabeth S. Munnecke Scholarship (2 for tuition and fees up to $10,000; valued at up to $40,000) for Arlington high school seniors, who have attended APS during their junior and senior years, to attend a 4-year college or university. Scholarship recipients are asked to provide future public service in Arlington. Renewable for up to 3 years with good academic standing and continued Arlington residency. FN

New Americans Scholarship (1 at $2,500; valued at $12,500) for an APS high school senior or college student who is or whose parent is a refugee or immigrant to the U.S. Renewable through undergraduate degree with good academic standing. FN

Honorable William T. Newman, Jr. Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for an Arlington African-American high school senior with at least a 3.0 GPA, with an interest in law or the fine arts, to attend an accredited 4-year college or university.

Gail Nuckols Memorial Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for an APS high school senior who has a B average to attend a 4-year college or university. Preference given to a student planning to major in education. FN

Randolph G. Peyton University of Virginia Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for a University of Virginia student; award to be based on academic record and character. Renewable for up to 3 years with good academic standing. FN

Virginia Radigan Scholarship (1 at $2,500; valued at $10,000) for an Arlington high school senior female attending a 4-year college or university who is interested in studying mathematics or computer science. Renewable for up to 3 years with good academic standing. FN

Ralph Stone/Taylor Pride Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for an APS high school senior who attended Taylor Elementary School to attend a 4-year college or university.

Emerson G. and Dolores G. Reinsch Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for an APS high school senior, with at least a 3.0 GPA, to attend an accredited 4-year college or university. Preference given to a student with entrepreneurial spirit and/or planning to study business. FN

Wakefield Cohort Scholarship (1 at $2,000; valued at up to $10,000) for Wakefield senior who has been a participant in the Cohort program to attend an accredited postsecondary institution. Renewable through undergraduate degree with good academic standing. FN

Wakefield Goals Scholarship (1 at $2,000; valued at up to $10,000) for Wakefield senior who is or whose parent(s) are refugees or immigrants to the U.S., to attend an accredited postsecondary institution. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Renewable through undergraduate degree with good academic standing. FN

Sue G. Wysor Memorial Scholarship Fund (2 at $2,000; valued at $8,000) for APS high school seniors with at least a 2.5 GPA, who have a demonstrated interest in biological sciences. Recipients must attend an accredited 4-year institution or a college within the Virginia Community College System. Renewable for up to 3 years with good academic standing. FN

Yorktown Counseling PTA Scholarship (3 at $1,000) for a Yorktown senior who is in the first generation of their immediate family to attend college, has made academic improvement, or has overcome adversity during high school to attend a college or university. The student must have financial need. FN

Yorktown High School Scholarship (2 at $1,000) for a Yorktown senior, to attend an accredited learning institution.

Apply online beginning in January 2008 with a link to the online application at http://www.arlcf.org/. Apply and submit two letters of recommendation by March 7, 2008. Complete the FAFSA to be considered for the majority of the scholarships that are need-based and noted with FN.
